Specialized Naturally Occurring Asbestos Removal Project
BACKGROUND
EnviroScience Solutions was engaged to undertake a preliminary site assessment to investigate for the presence of NOA prior to earthworks commencing on a section of road within the Orange NSW region. The proposed earthworks were flagged as being situated in a high potential for NOA area as mapped by the NSW Government’s Heads of Asbestos Coordination Authorities (HACA). Analysis of samples obtained provided proof that asbestos materials in the form of tremolite were present in the soils.

SOLUTION
The EnviroScience team worked with the client and the client’s geotechnical personnel to create a site-specific management plan for the encapsulation of NOA at the base of the earthworks. Clean fill layers were installed over geofabric and hazard tape as indicators that NOA materials remained below, and coordinates were recommended to be noted on the client’s asbestos register. The installation of these key indicators had the potential to impact the stability of the road and the design had to meet compaction requirements outlined by the client. John Bartholomew of EnviroScience remained on site for the duration of the works providing day to day consultation. Staff working on the project received asbestos awareness training and an EnviroScience mobile laboratory provided quick turnaround of air monitoring results for two shifts each work day. On site reading of slides provided immediate results to the client, providing assurance works met all requirements and workers were not put at risk.
CONCLUSION
Delivery of this project demonstrates EnviroScience Solutions’ ongoing involvement and capabilities to work in conjunction with other contractors to complete tasks that meet all the expectations of the client.
